Chapter 21

The steely gray and ominous morning sky was a good fit for how Rachel felt. Sleep had not been her friend. She’d lain awake for hours, hoping Quinn would come to bed, but eventually she’d caught on. Her gut-purging comments had kept him away. She’d said she’d rather sleep alone, and he’d granted her that wish. Stupid man.

But she hadn’t been alone. Her neck-tickling friend had stayed with her. And that wasn’t exactly conducive to sleep either. So now she needed caffeine and hoped the house was stocked with decent tea. Because she needed gallons of it.

Grace was in the kitchen already, and the pungent smell of grapefruit filled the air. Rachel wrinkled her nose at the two bowls with pink-centered halves. “Great, Logan likes them too? No wonder he’s perfect for you.”

Grace laughed. “He’s only eating grapefruit today because it’s my turn to make breakfast.”

“You call that breakfast?”

“I’ll make toast, too.”

“Wow. Going all out. But he knew your aversion to cooking before you got married, right?”

“Yep.”

“So he made his bed. Speaking of beds, Quinn never slept in mine last night.” Rachel was barely surprised the words had fallen from her mouth.

“Problems?”

She sighed. “Yeah. I feel really close to him sometimes, but mostly it’s like he’s holding me at arm’s length. I finally badgered him into saying he loved me yesterday. But it wasn’t the magic pill I’d hoped for.”

Grace leaned back against the counter. “You’ve been sleeping together up until last night?”

Rachel hefted herself up on the counter. “Well, yes, but no. He’s been coming to bed after I fall asleep and leaving before I wake up.” She met Grace’s direct gaze. “Yesterday, I told him it was killing me that he wouldn’t touch me and that I’d rather sleep alone than feel so lonely beside him, and I guess he took me at my word. He never came to bed at all.”

“I’d say you shot yourself in the foot. Men are literal. You can’t expect them to”—she finger quoted—“get the underlying message.”

“Hmph.”

At that moment, Quinn walked through the door.

Grace grinned and said, “Good morning, Quinn. There was apparently a miscommunication between you two yesterday. And by the look of things, you didn’t sleep any better than she did. So before we set out on this morning’s mission, I suggest you talk it out.” Her eyebrows lowered and the smile disappeared. “And I do mean talk. That means you both contribute truthfully and come to some conclusions.” She pushed away from the counter. “Meanwhile, Logan and I are having breakfast in bed. We’ll see you two in about an hour.”

Before she got out the door, Rachel said, “I thought you were taking him some toast, too?”

“Damn.” Grace backed up, opened the fridge and looked inside. “This’ll make up for it,” she said as she tucked a can of whipped cream under her arm and left with a grin.

“Well,” said Rachel as the door swung closed. “Why didn’t you sleep with me last night?”

He blinked like a confused owl. “You said—” he paused for effect“—you’d rather sleep alone.
